AMA 4-Stroke National #1 - February 10, 2002

AMA 4-Stroke National #1 was a huge success. A record number 82 pro's showed up at Speedworld Motocross Park in Arizona all expecting to be in the big show. It was an international field with riders from all over the U.S.A. and even a few riders from Germany and Sweden. After a couple of qualifiers and an LCQ, it was a full gate of 41 riders ready to thunder their way around the track. The first moto saw 2000 AMA 4-Stroke Champion Craig Decker snag the holeshot on a Yamaha 426. The battle up front was great between Decker, Carpenter, and defending 2001 champ Walters. Both Walters and Carpenter were riding the White Bros. new weapon of choice, the Honda CRF 450. The three battled all race long with Carpenter taking the 1st, Walters the 2nd, and Decker the 3rd. 1999 champ Dustin Nelson and #2 plate holder Nathan Woods both put in strong rides as well.

Moto #2 saw local boy Robert Naughton grab the holeshot aboard his YSA KTM 520. The crowd went crazy seeing there local hero out front. There was some trouble in the first turn for some of the riders with Carpenter, Lamastus and several others going down. So, the battle was on with Walters out front and Decker in 2nd. Dustin Nelson and Nathan Woods were 3 and 4. From there, the race settled into a nice pace with most of the action in mid to back of the pack. Carpenter and Lamastus put on a great riding clinic weaving in and out of riders. By mid race, Carpenter had worked his way up to about 10th and made another mistake. That let Lamastus back by for awhile. But Carpenter would not be denied. He made his way back up to 9th by the end of the race with Walters taking the 2nd moto win and the overall victory. Craig Decker took the 2nd overall. Dustin Nelson took the overall 3rd and Nathan Woods got the overall 4 spot.

The signs say it all.
