AMA 4-Stroke National #2 - March 3, 2002
AMA 4-Stroke National #2 was another huge success. The track had a new design and Coleman and his crew did a great job. A huge number of pro's, 70 in all showed up at Ocotillo Rcaeway in Arizona. Riders from all over the U.S.A. had their sites set on defending champ and round one winner Spud Walters. After a couple of qualifiers and an LCQ, it was a full gate of 41 riders ready to thunder their way around the track. The first moto holeshot went to McAllister aboard his KTM 520. Walters was not far behind and Carpenter had a bad start. Both Walters and Carpenter are riding the White Bros. Honda CRF 450s. McAllister lead for a few laps and then Spud worked his way up to the lead spot and never looked back. With 2 laps to go Carpenter had moved all the way up to 2nd and was giving his team mate Walters all kinds of pressure. They went across the finish line almost side by side with Walters getting the 1st, Carpenter taking the 2nd, and McAllister a solid 3rd. 1999 champ Dustin Nelson, Nathan Woods, and Arizona local boy Robert Naughton were looking good too. Lamastus went down during the race and was carted off with an injury. We hope he's o.k. and look to see him back real soon.
Moto #2 had Paul Carpenter grab the holeshot aboard his Honda CRF 450. This was his chance to go for the win. Carpenter rode hard and pulled a nice gap on the field. Spud was in second but didn't have the speed that Carpenter had in this moto. Dustin Nelson and McAllister were up in the front pack also. From there, the race settled into a nice pace. Carpenter looked like he was going to take the overall victory when dissaster struck. A lapper moved in front of him when he was going by causing Carpenter to go down. This was all Spud needed to get his spark going. He passed for the lead but it was a small margin. Caroenter was all over him again and ran out of laps. They finished the day in that order. Spud with the overall 1st, Carpenter with the 2nd, and McAllister with the overall 3rd.
